Natural Cold Busters!!!!

Home / Life Lucid / Natural Cold Busters!!!!

This post is inspired by a new breastfeeding mommy friend of mine {we were friends before either of us became mothers}. She caught a cold and needed to know of any alternatives to medicine to knock that cold out without passing along harmful substances to her little nursling. So I sent her a list of natural remedies and thought, hmmm, I wonder how many other breastfeeding mommies, and people who aren’t breastfeeding, need some assistance in the natural cold remedy department. Viola!!!! This post was birthed.

Oregano Oil/ Oil of Oregano {eh, tomato tamato}- taste like motor oil and gets the job done{not that I’ve ever tasted motor oil, I imagine that it taste like it}! I probably should have started with the benefits first. Antiviral, anti fungal, antibacterial, anti parasitic. It’s antioxidant and purifying properties make it useful for a host of ailments{I’ll only highlight its cold fighting benefits here}. It serves both your respiratory and immune systems. Depending on the type you purchase {I prefer 100% pure essential oil} take 2-3 drops directly into your mouth{try to shoot it as far back into your mouth as possible}.Have a chaser readily available. Trust and believe you will wish you had one if you don’t. You can mix it in your juice or water {I don’t recommend it}, and you’ll have to bear with the taste as you drink the whole cup.

Elderberry- Makes a great chaser for the Oregano. This is one fierce cold and flu fighter. Flu Fighta {say it out loud, sounds cool}! It prevents the virus from penetrating your cells. Antioxidant, anti inflammatory, anti bacterial, anti viral, and the list goes on. You can purchase various forms. I use the syrup. Take a teaspoon right after that horrendous oregano oil and your good to go. Also a fever reducer due to its sweat-inducing quality. For fever reduction it’s best to drink really hot as a tea. There are opposing opinions on using elderberry and breastfeeding I did it and my son is just fine. It doesn’t even make since that it isn’t ok to breastfeed and use Elderberry because there is Elderberry syrup for children {toddler aged, but still}. Especially since it’s a fantastic Flu Fighta!!

Eucalyptus Oil- This is your natural vapor rub. The smell is invigorating!!! Hmm where to begin?! Benefits. Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti spasmodic, anti bacterial, anti microbial, anti viral, decongestant, deodorant, stimulant, and I’m sure there are some that I’m missing because the benefits of this plant are numerous. The respiratory system is the focus here. How to use it? Sprinkle this oil in your shower like you’re sprinkling holy water {take the bottle and shake it throughout your shower especially the shower head}. This will allow you to breath easy. At night put it bedside in an oil burner dilute with water and Let It Burn {in my Usher voice}. Great for when your little one is sick too, put it in their room somewhere they can’t interfere with it, and for obvious safety reasons, you can just set it in a small dish without diluting it or burning it. It gets the job done either way. During the day you can put a few dabs behind your ears, on your chest, your wrists, and your back. Use caution when breastfeeding and skip the wrists and chest area to prevent your little one from coming in direct contact for several reasons:
1) the oil may be too intense for their new baby skin
2) it may burn their little baby eyes
3) they may lick it and it will burn their little baby mouth.
You can also dilute it with water and gargle if you have a sore throat. Also a fever reducer {nice to mix with peppermint to achieve the goal}. Spray on your body and it should aid in bringing your fever down.

Garlic- I love garlic. Not only is it good for you, it taste good too!! Too much though and it’ll seep from your pores and people will be offended by your odor. Anti bacterial, anti inflammatory, antioxidant, antibiotic, and antiviral. Promotes circulatory health. Natural cleanser/purifier. If you are bold go ahead and eat a clove raw or a teaspoon of it minced/chopped {I ain’t the one}. If not, and that’s totally okay, then you have options. You can bring it to a slow boil {heat on low}, add honey, drink it, and eat the garlic. You can throw it in the blender with ginger, honey, coconut milk or water, and drink. If you don’t like garlic to begin with, and/or hate peeling it, then there is the pill form. The quickest way to get the benefits is to suck it up and eat it raw. It’s totally up to you.

Ginger- I love me some ginger. Anti inflammatory, anti bacterial, fever reducer, promotes healthy blood circulation, natural expectorant {breaks down mucus}, and a host of other great healing benefits. I grate it and slow boil with the garlic and drink as a tea. Or blend it with garlic, warm water, honey, lemon, and a dash of cayenne pepper. Not only do I blend this cold tonic, I blend ginger in most of my fruit and veggie smoothies when my family and I are doing well. I love cooking with it too!!! Like the garlic, ginger can be found in pill form and you can easily take the capsules without the hassle of peeling, cutting, and pressing or grating.

I encourage you to research these remedies yourself and most of all TRY them, they work. Experience is the greatest teacher!!! Click on any of the products here to purchase them if you’d like.
